Best AI for laser engraving files: SVGs, photos and relief art
There isn't one best AI for laser engraving files. The right pick depends on the file you need: a vector for cutting and line engraving, a prepared photo for photo engraving, or relief art for 3D-style engraving. Here's the short version, then a workflow that covers all three.
Step by step
- Decide the file type first. Cuts and line engravings need a vector (SVG/DXF). Photo engravings need a high-resolution greyscale image. Relief or 3D-style engraving needs a depth map or relief output.
- For new vector art from a prompt, use Recraft: it's one of the few generators that outputs genuine SVG. Other image generators (Midjourney, Ideogram and similar) give you a raster image you'll still have to vectorize.
- For an existing logo, sketch or raster design, run it through Vectorizer.AI (you can preview the result before paying) or Recraft's built-in vectorizer, and export SVG.
- If you own an xTool, try Atomm AI: its prompts are tuned for engraving, it preps photos by material, can vectorize and make relief output, and sends files straight into xTool Studio. It's credit-based after a few free uses a month.
- If you own a Glowforge with Premium, Magic Canvas turns a text prompt into engrave-friendly art right on your Glowforge workspace. It's handy if you already pay for Premium, not a reason to subscribe.
- For customer photos, upscale low-res images with Topaz Gigapixel, remove or simplify the background with remove.bg, then convert to greyscale and dither in your laser software.
- Open every vector in LightBurn or Inkscape before cutting: look for open paths, overlapping nodes and tiny islands. AI output almost always needs this cleanup.
- Run a test on scrap of the same material, then adjust power and speed before the real piece.

Which AI makes SVG files for laser cutting?
Recraft generates genuine SVG vectors from a prompt. Most other image generators produce raster images, so you'd run their output through a vectorizer such as Vectorizer.AI or Recraft's vectorizer first.
Can I use Midjourney images for laser engraving?
Yes for photo-style engraving, since that uses a raster image. For cutting or line engraving you need to vectorize the image first and clean up the paths.
Do I need an xTool or Glowforge to use their AI tools?
Atomm AI and Glowforge Magic Canvas are built around their own machines' software, so they're most useful if you own that brand. Magic Canvas comes with Glowforge Premium; Atomm AI gives a few free uses a month, then runs on credits.
Is AI-made art ready to engrave straight away?
Rarely. Check vectors for open paths and stray nodes, check photos for resolution and contrast, and always run a test on scrap first.
